POTOMAC, MD – Verizon recently received a United States Postal Service Supplier Performance Award, which is awarded to USPS vendors who showed exemplary effort in helping the Postal Service achieve its mission in providing mail service to the American public. Verizon was one of three Supplier Performance Award recipients.
During Hurricane Maria, one of the strongest hurricanes to hit Puerto Rico in 90 years, Puerto Rico’s telecommunications and power infrastructure were destroyed. Citizens found themselves with no connection to the outside world. Without mail service, items like prescriptions, medical supplies, humanitarian aid and other essential items could not be delivered.
The damage to both the power and telecommunications grids necessitated a unique solution. Verizon worked with USPS to deploy an agency-specific satellite solution that helped speed the resumption of mail service. This solution gave USPS access to voice, data, wireless and point of sale communications.
Mike Maiorana, Verizon senior vice president for public sector, accepted the award.
“Verizon is proud that USPS trusted us in such an unprecedented, critical moment. Working with the USPS, we were able to develop a solution which not only enabled the delivery of essential items, but helped the citizens of Puerto Rico regain some sense of normalcy,” said Maiorana. “We run to a crisis, and we value our relationships with our government partners.”
In addition to Verizon’s work in Puerto Rico, Verizon provides advanced networking, telephony, contact center, managed services, professional services and wireless solutions for USPS and has been a USPS supplier for more than 20 years. XO Communications, now part of Verizon, received a USPS Supplier Performance Award four years ago.
