When there’s an earthquake and a building collapses, first responders need to know where people were before the disaster occurred in order to help determine where they are now. Thanks to Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband and new technology from Kiana Analytics, locating people in need of aid can get a lot easier.
Kiana was selected to be part of Verizon’s 5G First Responder Lab developed to give innovators access to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network to create, test and refine 5G solutions for public safety. Kiana Analytics makes a cloud-based safety and security platform that leverages intelligent video and machine-learning techniques to provide predictive and behavioral analysis to improve real-time location and situational awareness.
5G’s high bandwidth and low latency are critical for transferring the latest location information to first responders in near real-time and for sending 4K high definition live video feeds to first responders.
“With 5G, we can really look at situational awareness in real time,” said Kiana Analytics’ Nader Fathi. “Today we see about two meter accuracy, pinging devices every three seconds. With 5G having a very fast upload and download, we can get down to sub-meter accuracy. Plus, with edge computing we can do this calculation on the cameras very quickly and tie the information with other cameras to help detect physical location.”
