Verizon is pleased to release our Transparency Report for the first half of 2018. This is our tenth Transparency Report. As in the past, this report describes the different types of demands we receive and the types of data that we disclose in response to those demands. The number of demands that we have received each year continues to be fairly stable.
On June 22, 2018, the Supreme Court of the United States decided United States v. Carpenter, a case addressing whether law enforcement must obtain a warrant based on probable cause, as opposed to an order based on a lesser showing, in order to compel a wireless carrier to release historical cell site location information. A majority of the Court concluded that a warrant was necessary. Since the Court’s ruling, Verizon has accepted only probable cause warrants before releasing historical location information. We have seen an increase in warrants during the past month.
