Hurricane Matthew

Bluffton, S.C. – To help victims of Hurricane Matthew more easily reach family, friends and other important contacts, a Wireless Emergency Communication Center (WECC) has been deployed by Verizon in the Lowcountry near the areas hardest hit by the storm.

Wireless Emergency Communication Centers are generator-powered mobile units that have device charging and computer workstations, and wireless phones, tablets and other devices to contact friends, family and other important contacts over the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network. A WECC has been deployed to the following location:

  • Bluffton High School, 12 H.E. McCracken Circle, Bluffton, S.C. 29910
Open: Tuesday, Oct. 11, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The WECC will provide teams of technicians available to troubleshoot and charge up wireless phone batteries that survived the storm and/or have lost power.

“Many residents otherwise have been completely cut off from their loved ones and other important contacts such as their insurance companies, so the ability to make a call, no matter how brief, can be invaluable,” said Roger Tang, president – South East Market for Verizon.

Additionally, Verizon Wireless Communication Stores has opened its company-owned stores in the impacted areas of Beaufort and Hilton Head to provide free local and long distance calls, phone charging and phone troubleshooting to all local residents, regardless of their personal wireless provider.
