For 20 years, Karen Opp has experienced the unique challenges of being a military spouse. Whenever her husband, Joe, has been deployed overseas with the US Navy, the Verizon HR consultant has served as the sole caretaker of their three young children. During the past decade, her family has relocated from Florida to Maine, to Nebraska and back to Florida.

Karen hasn’t faced these challenges alone. For 17 years she has been a valued Verizon employee, enjoying the flexibility and support we provide not only to transitioning service members and veterans, but also to their partners. If you’re a military spouse, we offer you the technology, resources and services you need to keep your own career (and family unit) thriving.

Networking, Mentoring and Other Benefits Exclusively for Military Families

Verizon is honored to have been named one of the top 50 spouse-friendly employers in the Military Friendly Employers rankings.  Verizon also teamed up with Hiring our Heroes to develop a mobile app, offering veterans and their spouses online resources including the “personal branding” resume engine, access to hiring fairs and virtual mentoring we offer to military personnel through the Hiring Our Heroes app.

We’re also pleased to offer networking opportunities with employers and other military spouses through exclusive receptions and social media groups, military discounts, and our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which provides confidential services to help you meet the challenges of everyday life as a military family.

“I love that Verizon helps our military families stay in touch, even when everyone’s not at ‘home.”

Technology to Keep the Family Unit Strong

Our flexible approach to work/life balance, combined with forward-thinking technology, also helps keep our military families connected. “We don’t have any family here in Florida, so when Joe is deployed, it’s hard to find someone to watch three kids while I work,” Karen says. “Verizon has been so accommodating. I take advantage of the technology available to videoconference in and work remotely.”

While Joe was deployed in Japan, he made video calls home at night to help their son do his homework. “We can even do that from our smartphones now,” Karen says.
