A team of six Hispanic girls from Resaca Middle School in Los Fresnos, Texas, had a big idea: developing an app that would help visually impaired students navigate their school. With the help of Verizon’s Innovative App Challenge, the girls turned this idea into a reality and not only won the overall challenge, but also went on to present the app, Hello Navi, at the White House Science Fair.
Like these girls, many Hispanics are advancing our society and future in impactful and inspirational ways. In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Verizon is celebrating the countless contributions of Hispanics in every aspect of our society.
Growing Young Minds
This year’s theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month -- “Hispanics: a Legacy of History, a Present of Action and a Future of Success” -- not only celebrates the Hispanic community’s rich history, but also gives focus to ensuring a better tomorrow.
How do we do this? It begins with exposing young minds to education, entrepreneurship and innovation.
According to the 2010 U.S. Census., the Hispanic-American population has surpassed 50 million and is projected to more than double by 2050. Hispanics represent one of the largest, youngest and fastest-growing minority groups in America.
With the talent pool growing and nearly 3 million unfilled STEM jobs in the U.S., there is a significant opportunity to encourage career paths in science, technology, engineering and math.
Becoming Future Ready
Through initiatives like the Verizon Innovative App Challenge and Inspire Her Mind, Verizon is embracing diverse talent and helping others realize their greatest potential – like the girls from Resaca Middle School.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Verizon’s CreaFuturo website shares inspiring stories of those making a difference in the community and offers resources to help others achieve their own goals.
