Verizon to Robocallers: Your Days are Numbered; Starting in March, Verizon’s spam and robocalling features to be offered free to all Verizon Customers

Robocalls. These automated telemarketing calls tie up your line and waste your time. Whether they’re trying to get you to invest in a “once in a lifetime opportunity,” or worse, attempting to con you into giving up your credit card number or other personal information, these prerecorded calls are annoying and – in many cases – fraudulent.

So, how can we put a stop to these delinquent dialers?

Here’s what Verizon is doing to stop robocalls:

  1. We stop many robocalls before they reach our customers.
  2. We keep an eye out for suspicious calling patterns on our network and then work with law enforcement to shut down illegal robocallers.
  3. We make sure our customers are empowered to use the full array of call blocking and filtering technology available, both the tools that Verizon offers directly and those that third parties like Nomorobo offer our customers.
  4. We are developing new technologies to stop robocalls by working with partners in our industry.
  5. We support federal legislation to tackle the source of the problem – the scammers who make these calls.

And here’s what you can do:

Here are four ways to cut down on spam calls.

  1. Hang up. Don’t press any numbers on your phone or ask to speak to a live operator. This will just confirm that your number is in service, likely resulting in more calls. And never divulge or confirm any personal information.
  2. Register your number at DoNotCall.gov. Although this FTC registry won’t spare you from calls from scammers and thieves intent on breaking the law, it should prevent you from receiving “live” telemarketing calls, which are regulated by the federal government but are not illegal.
  3. Employ existing blocking options.  We make sure our customers are empowered to stop spam, robocalls and potential fraud with tools including the upgraded Caller Name ID app for wireless. We recommend for Fios voice customers Nomorobo and for Verizon traditional copper phone customers the CPR Call Blocker V5000 or Call Blocker Shield. We also have a number of other web resources to manage unwanted calls:

4. You can also register a complaint with the FTC. While the FTC probably won’t act on your complaint directly, by filing a report you may help them shut down the most egregious offenders.
