To stay ahead of adversaries, military decision-makers need timely and accurate information.

In modern military operations, collecting intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) data information is crucial for making snap decisions and staying ahead of opponents. Just as crucial is the ability to share that information with other teams and even allies across multiple domains and through disparate networks. Seeking a way to gather, analyze, and share this information from drones and other aircraft more efficiently, Lockheed Martin called upon Verizon to leverage our expertise in advanced 5G technology to address those needs.

Working together, Lockheed Martin and Verizon were able to demonstrate two significant technological advancements that are crucial for the Department of Defense.

To provide enhanced situational awareness and command & control for commanders and service members in the field, the first test involved near real-time ISR radio frequency and streaming video data transmitted over 5G millimeter wave links. This allows advanced signal processing algorithms to occur at the tactical edge. The low latency and reliability provided by the Verizon network was critical in being able to process this data in near real time, which was displayed in a livestream video feed.

The second test demonstrated the technology’s ability to passively detect and geolocate RF signals that could be used for communications, sending, or jamming, capabilities that will enable the DoD to detect and target adversarial assets in a military environment.

By blending advanced commercial 5G capabilities with military capabilities using secure, open standards, Lockheed Martin and Verizon are helping to make the DoD’s vision for integrated deterrence a reality.

This project not only advanced the capabilities of the DoD but also set a new standard for the integration of commercial and military technologies.
