Instead of physical navigation buttons, your Galaxy Note8 uses a customizable Navigation Bar.

Instead of physical navigation buttons, your Galaxy Note8 uses a customizable Navigation Bar.

To modify it, swipe down to open to open the notifications panel and select Settings.
Tap the search icon and look for Navigation Bar.
Select Navigation Bar from the results.
You can tap the color here and see it change at the bottom.
You can also turn on Unlock with Home button to go directly from the Lock Screen to the Home Screen.
Or, change the button layout if that's more comfortable for you.
Now let the screen go dark, and give Home a firm press to go directly to the home screen.
