Poor phone audio, speaker not working, no ringing or notification sounds

If your phone’s speaker isn’t working when you make a call:

• Check in your phone settings that Do not disturb or Airplane mode isn’t enabled.
• Check the call volume on your phone. To check, make a call and press the volume rocker on the side of your phone. Or, in your phone settings, set the voice call volume to maximum.
• Disconnect your phone from any Bluetooth device. When your phone is connected to a Bluetooth device (e.g., headphones, stand alone speaker) your phone sends the audio signals to the device’s speakers.
• Check that your phone has the latest software update.

Safe mode prevents third party apps from running on your Android phone. If the speaker works in Safe Mode it could be that an app you recently downloaded is causing the speaker problem. You can delete the app in your app settings.

When using your speakerphone during a call, you may experience poor audio quality issues (e.g., low volume, voices sounding like a robot, etc.). To address poor audio quality issues:

Android:

• Test your speakers. Open the music app on your phone and play an audio file. If the file plays and you can hear the audio, that means your speakers are working.
• To help clear up noises during calls, go to Settings, tap Sound & Vibration then enable Adaptive Sound.

iPhone:

• Take off any screen protectors/cases /plastic wrap.
• Check the speaker’s opening for blockages and clean if needed.
• Go to Settings > Sounds (or Settings > Sounds & Haptics). Slide Ringer and Alerts back and forth. Hearing no sound or seeing that the speaker button on the slider is dimmed means your device’s speaker might need hands on servicing.
• If you do hear sound, try making a call with your iPhone and turn on speakerphone.

If the above doesn’t work and you continue to hear beeping, or have low audio quality, it could be network issue:

• Try to call again later, or from a different location.
  
• You can check if there is a network issue in your area and report your issue.

If you hear clicking on a call, you may be getting notified:

• That there's another incoming call.
• That you have notifications like calendar appointments, email notifications, text messages etc. You can turn off your notification alerts in your phone settings.
• Your apps are sending notifications. Try resetting your App preferences.

If that’s not the case and the noises are not alerts, If you continue to hear beeping, or have low audio quality, this could be network issue. Try to call again later or try to call from a different location. You can check if there is a network issue in your area and report your issue.

If you can't hear the phone ring for received or missed incoming calls you can:

• Turn off Do not disturb - Do not disturb stops you from being notified that someone is calling you. Follow the Android or iPhone instructions to turn off Do not disturb.
• Turn off Airplane mode - Airplane mode prevents your device from connecting to cellular and Wi-Fi networks so that calls won't reach you. Follow the Android or iPhone instructions to turn off Airplane mode.
• Turn off Silent mode - If you silenced your device, you may not notice that someone is trying to reach you. To unsilence an iPhone, toggle the ringer switch to the on position. Use the volume buttons to increase the volume of incoming calls. On Android devices, use the volume buttons to increase the volume of incoming calls.

Check to make sure you don’t have call forwarding set up.

You may have no notification sound when you get a message on your iPhone or Android phone. To be sure you’re hearing notifications for incoming text messages you can:

• Android: Go to Settings>Apps, select Messages, then Notifications>Incoming Messages. Make sure it's set to Default. Tap Sound and try selecting other tones to see if they play.
• iPhone: Go to Settings > Notifications. Then scroll to Messages and make sure sounds are on and the box is checked.

If you’re hearing no sound on Bluetooth devices during phone calls you can try:

• Turning up the phone volume.
• Checking the Bluetooth settings to make sure that the headphones are connected through Bluetooth.
• Checking the Speaker settings:
  • Android: While on the call, tap the Speaker or Bluetooth icon, then choose the headphone/speaker.
  • iPhone: While you are talking, tap the Audio icon, then choose the headphone/speaker.
• Charge and restart the headphones/speaker, then reconnect it to the phone.
• Move away from or turn off other wireless devices so they don’t interfere with the wireless call.
