Managing Duplicate Contacts Using Google (2:45)
Duplicate contacts occur when you separately save multiple phone numbers or email addresses for the same person.
There are many different ways to remove them from your contact list. Today, we'll show you how to clean up duplicates from your Google account.
Once you add your Gmail account to your Android™ device, your Google contacts are automatically synced.
This is helpful because you know your contact information is backed up. This also allows you to access your contacts from any computer by signing into your Google account, clicking the Google Apps icon and selecting Contacts. If you don't see this option, click More.
When accessing your contacts from Google, you can find and remove any duplicates.
On the main screen, there is a menu bar to the left of your contacts' list. Click on the Find Duplicates option.
A list of your duplicate contacts is shown. Now, you can choose to merge some or all of your contacts or dismiss the ones that you don't want to edit.
In the example given here, there are two listings for Joe Smith - email and a mobile number; you can remove the duplicate simply by clicking Merge. Joe's contact information is now merged into one entry. If you decide that merging these was a mistake, you can click Undo in the dialogue box that appears.
Now, when viewing your contact list, Joe's contact info has been merged and the duplicate entries are gone.
You're probably thinking, but how do I get the corrected contacts onto my phone?
No worries. Simply sync your account by taking the following steps from your phone:
- Tap Settings
- Tap Accounts
- Tap Google
- Tap More or Menu (3 vertical dots)
- Then tap Sync
Now, when you view your contacts, you'll see that Joe is listed only once.
As you can see, these steps are a quick and easy way to help keep your contact list up-to-date and organized!
