Verizon has long-supported comprehensive federal privacy legislation. And looking at the headlines over the last year, we all know that the need for Congress to pass a federal consumer privacy law has never been clearer.
That’s why we are encouraged that the Senate Commerce Committee is holding the first of several hearings this week on “Examining Safeguards for Consumer Data Privacy”. America currently leads the world in innovation – we need to reclaim the thought leadership on policy development for protecting consumers’ data.
We can only achieve the right policy balance and deliver greater accountability, transparency and consumer confidence by working together. It’s imperative that a diverse group of voices contribute to the conversation on how to legislate on privacy. Industry, consumer groups, public interest organizations, policymakers and individual consumers should contribute their expertise and experience to this process.
At Verizon, we are ready to contribute our perspective and we look forward to working with all these stakeholders on this crucial issue.
