Battery Backup Unit
Your Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is installed with a separate Battery Backup Unit (BBU). When a fully charged 12-volt battery is installed in the BBU, you will have up to 8 hours of backup power for basic voice service, including calls to 911.
Note: Internet and TV service will not be available during a power outage even if a fully charged battery is installed. The BBU only provides backup power for voice service.
NOTE : If you use Verizon’s fiber optic voice service to connect your alarm or fire system to a central monitoring station, you have the option to receive email and/or text message notifications when (1) commercial power to your equipment is lost, and (2) when your backup power has exhausted. Notification of the exhaustion of backup power requires a Verizon-provided Battery Backup Unit or Power Reserve. How to access the battery within your unit
Click the red "Next" in the carousel below to find your battery backup unit and steps on how to access the battery.
Important: Before you begin, unplug the Battery Backup Unit from the wall outlet.

Alcatel
Place your hand in the inset between the panels and pull the door open from right to left.
Your battery is located in the top part of the unit.

CyberPower
- Your battery is located in the top part of the unit.

Delta
- Your battery is located in the top part of the unit.

AFC
- Use a screwdriver to remove the screw securing the access panel. Press the lever on the right side of the Battery Backup Unit (BBU) door. The door swings open from right to left.

APC
- Remove the screw that secures the access panel.

Desktop Battery Backup Unit
- Press down on the release tab on the back of the ONT, then pull down the battery cover.

Emerson
- Release the tabs on the top and bottom of the unit. The door swings to the left. Unstrap velcro strap to remove battery.

Tellabs
- Release the tabs on the top and bottom of the unit. The door swings to the left. Unstrap velcro strap to remove battery.

Arris
- The battery is in the top compartment. To open unit, remove the screw holding the door shut. The door swings from right to left.

Arris Combo
- The battery is in the top compartment. To open unit, depress tab on the top right and swing the door open from right to left.

Cyber Shield
- Do not open the unit. Please contact Verizon to have a technician service the unit.

Delta FSB
- Do not open the unit. Please contact Verizon to have a technician service the unit.
Understanding the lights and buttons
Learn about the alarm
An alarm will sound once a minute to alert you if the battery it is not fully charged or has been drained completely. This will be repeated until you press the Alarm Silence button.
Buttons
Alarm Silence. Press to silence the audible alarm.
Battery Emergency Use. Press once to reboot the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and get up to 1 hour of battery life for emergency phone calls. Once pushed, all remaining battery life will be used.Lights

Do I need a battery backup for my service?
If you have a backup battery, and do not have voice service through Verizon, or if you do not need voice service during a power outage, you can disconnect the battery.
How to disconnect the battery
The steps to disconnect the battery are the same for all battery backup units. Your unit may look different from the one in the illustration below. If you are having trouble accessing your battery, you can view detailed information on where to access your battery by unit type.
Important: Before you begin, unplug the BBU power from your wall outlet.

Then open the battery compartment.Remove the plug connector with the red and black cables by pinching and sliding it out of its location.

Gently disengage the retaining clips that hold the battery in place and remove the battery.Disconnect the battery clips from the old battery and set the battery aside for proper disposal. If you are not installing a new battery, proceed to Step 8. Save the red and black cable for future use.

Remove the plastic covers on the black and red terminals of your new battery. Connect the battery clips to the corresponding black (- negative) and red (+ positive) terminals on the new battery.Slide the new battery into the battery compartment , securing it underneath the retaining clips.

Insert the plug connector back into position. If the battery is installed correctly, you'll hear a beep and the battery power and system status lights will be solid green.Replace the battery cover and plug the BBU back into your wall outlet.
Monitoring and maintaining the battery
You are responsible for monitoring and maintaining your backup battery. Battery age, usage and temperature will impact battery life and performance so reducing the amount of time the batteries remain stored and unused is recommended.
Only 12-volt 7.2Ah sealed lead acid batteries should be used in the BBU. Batteries should be purchased just prior to replacement as12-volt batteries may not maintain their shelf life when stored.
If you use Verizon’s voice service with our backup power to connect a fire alarm to a central monitoring station, we will notify you during a loss of commercial power if you provide us an email or mobile number when placing your order.Disconnecting and replacing the battery

How to stop your backup battery unit from beeping
An alarm will sound once a minute to alert you if the 12 volt battery in the battery backup unit (BBU) is not fully charged or has been drained completely. Your battery unit may look different from the one in the illustration below. The steps to mute battery beeping are the same for all battery backup units.
How to stop the beeping
Locate your battery backup unit (BBU)
- Press and hold the Alarm silence button for 10 seconds.
- You should either hear a loud beep or the lights will flash on and off. If you did not get a beep or flashing lights, press and hold the Alarm silence button and the emergency use button together for 10 seconds.
- The above steps will reboot your BBU and clear the alarm.
Note: The reboot will temporarily disrupt all your Fios services and take between 3 to 5 minutes to complete.

How to purchase a new battery
You can purchase a new battery from Verizon by visiting verizon.com/accessories or you may purchase one from a third-party vendor. If you choose to purchase your replacement battery from a third-party vendor, please make sure that you are purchasing a 12-volt 7.2Ah SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) battery.
Note: Only 12-volt 7.2Ah sealed lead acid batteries should be used in the battery backup unit. Batteries should be purchased just prior to replacement as 12-volt batteries may not maintain their shelf life when stored.
How to dispose of your old battery
When replacing your battery, please make sure to dispose of your old battery properly. For more information about recycling, you can contact Call2Recycle at 1.877.RECYCLE (1.877.273.2925) or visit call2recycle.org to find a list of the drop-off locations closest to you. You may also visit http://www.ehso.com/ehshome/batteries.php or call the EPA at 202.272.0167 for instructions. Your local municipality may also have information about proper disposal of batteries.
